Since 1972, over 5000 students ranging in age from four to eighty-three have enjoyed learning from our accelerated, unique and self-motivational system of instruction. Whether your goal is to play in a band, around a campfire or just for your own enjoyment, you should consider our school for all your needs. All lessons are taught in our Maitland studio, just 5 minutes from Brockville. Instruction is available Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9:00 am and 10:00 pm. Various levels of instruction equip the student to be able to play by ear as well as by note.

Our newly renovated studio includes ergonomic drafting chairs for your comfort. As well, other members of your family can relax during your lesson around our fireplace in our recently added waiting area including a leather couch and recliner.

We provide private as well as group instruction. We are equipped to handle up to 12 students in each group (same instrument).

Jam sessions are held on a regular basis so people can apply material they have learned during their lessons.

Additional playing opportunities with Gordon’s band, The Andrews Family, are provided for students who wish to be involved in public performances at area festivals, hospitals and nursing homes.

For those interested, we also provide training in our recording studio. Students can learn the basics on how to create recordings of their own music using the latest in digital recording technology.

Lesson Guidelines

Lessons are scheduled on a weekly basis and are ½ hour in length.
Lessons start the first week of September and finish during the third week of July.
Only students who finish during the third week of July can be guaranteed their same time slot in September.
The cost for each lesson is $16.00.
Additional members of the same family are charged $8.00 for each lesson.
Lessons are billed one month in advance (lesson cost x number of lessons in month).
Payment is due at the beginning of the first lesson each month and is non-refundable.
Payment is by cash.
There is no charge for any lesson missed as a result of Christmas break, summer break or statutory holidays.
A regular fee will be charged for all other missed lessons.
If the instructor cancels a lesson, the lesson fee will be credited towards the following month or refunded.

If a student cannot attend their lessons on a regular basis he or she should probably not sign up for a regular spot on the schedule. We will always do our best to make your musical experience a happy and enjoyable one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long has your music school been in operation?
Our music school has been operating since 1972. We have had the privilege of successfully teaching over 4,500 students in both private and group instruction.
Where are the lessons conducted?

Lessons are conducted from our studio in Maitland. Our location is less than 5 minutes from Brockville. We have also taught in more than a dozen schools with the Upper Canada School Board.
How old should I be in order to start lessons?

In our school, students are typically in the 5-9 year old age range depending on the instrument they wish to learn.
Do I need to own an instrument in order to take lessons?

It is necessary for a student to have an instrument for regular daily practice. This will enable the student to learn and progress with a maximum amount of enjoyment.

How long does it take to learn to play an instrument?

Depending on the student's age, we recommend a minimum of 20-30 minutes of practice per day, at least five days per week. With this amount of practice a student can easily expect quick results. Many of our students, regardless of age, are able to play in bands and around campfires in as little as 3-4 months.

Also keep in mind that the amount of practice time is not nearly as important as how you practice. We recognize that every student is different in their approach to music and because of this we put much effort into tailoring a student's lesson and practice time to best suite their needs.
Do I have to learn to read music?

Our music school can help you learn to play by ear or by reading music. Many of our students choose to learn both approaches and therefore have "the best of both worlds".
When can I start lessons?

Lessons can be started at any time of the year. We take a break from lessons during Christmas and for the month of August.
Do I have to pay for a full semester?

Although some schools require a non-refundable payment for an entire semester, we do not believe this is in the best interest of the student. Music lessons at Andrews Family Music are prepaid on a monthly basis.
What is the best instrument to learn on?
We have been asked by many of our students, "Is it true that the piano is the best instrument to learn on?" We do not believe this is the case for all students. Certain instruments may be "age sensitive" due to their physical size, but for the most part, the best instrument is the one that the student is most interested in. Their prospect of achieving positive results will generally be higher with an instrument that the student wants to play and practice on a daily basis.
Do you offer lessons for adults?

We sure do! Adult students are always welcome and in fact make up a sizeable segment of new lesson students. Many of our adult students are in their 60s, 70s and even 80s. It's never too late!
